de Bono's Blue Thinking Hat
(Raven and the Coyote)
Print out and distribute a Story Theme Sheet for students to follow as a viewing focus for the Raven Tales episode Raven and the Coyote. The students should view the episode with de Bono's Blue Thinking Hat in mind (ie What overlying themes or morals are present in the episode?).
Note: It is important that the teacher reinforces the concept of 'Wearing a Blue Hat' - thinking of the overall picture. Students should, while watching the video, try to identify the themes or morals that are present in the episode. For example, in Raven and the Coyote, the moral of 'be careful what you wish for' may be present.
Watch the Raven Tales episode Raven and the Coyote.
Reminder: It is important to stop throughout the video and give students (A/B partners) opportunity to talk or respond to the video.
Once the video is complete, student partner groups report out to the class. Teacher records important themes and morals from the story on the board.
Using their Graphic Organizer as a writing guide, students create a written project symbolizing one main theme of the Raven Tales episode. Students can write in a number of formats which include:
- Journal write or narrative story (ie. What would society be like if the moral/theme was NOT followed)
- TV or radio episode script format
- Drama presentation
- School Poster as part of a School Campaign
- Powerpoint presentation
